So what is web-based software?
Web-based software works in the same way as programs that are loaded on to your PC or laptop. The only difference is that you don’t have to be physically sat in front of the machine. The software is accessed via the internet through your web browser (Internet Explorer, Safari, Firefox etc). You don’t need to download or install anything; you can simply log-on (with username and password for secure sites) and start using it. If you use online banking or emails such as Gmail, Hotmail or Yahoo, you are already using web-based software.
For many businesses, the internet offers a convenient way to communicate with customers, suppliers and staff. Some businesses trade exclusively online, while others offer a hybrid service where customers can browse and order online for physical collection. And although a lot of web-based software is aimed at improving interaction with your customers, it can also be used to streamline core business functions and allow staff to work from anywhere with an internet connection.
Is it secure?
The idea of accessing sensitive data online is a worry for some people, and understandably so. However, the reality is that web-based software tends to be extremely secure. Your data is stored on state-of-the-art servers and is backed up daily. The servers are located in data centres that employ the highest level of protection – security way beyond what you probably have in your own office.
And bear in mind that traditional software isn’t as safe as most people think. Data is stored on PCs, laptops, USB drives or portable hard drives. PCs are frequently not backed up correctly or have the latest security updates, laptops can be stolen or damaged and USB drives lost.
Why is it better for my business?
You can work from anywhere.
At the office, at home, on the move or even on the beach. With web-based software your office is anywhere and everywhere – all you need is reliable internet access.
Everything you need in one place.
When you use web-based software you can’t forget to copy something, or leave vital information in the office. All the information you need is in one place, accessible from anywhere with an internet connection, at any time. Safe, secure and password protected.
The right people get the right information.
Because users log-in to a central software program, you can be confident that they all have access to the latest information. And by setting a range of privileges and access levels, you can decide how much each person can see and do.
You’re always up-to-date
Whilst conventional software requires you to regularly download and install updates, web-based software is updated automatically. Whenever you log-in you can be confident that you are using the latest version.
